Fun Activities
Birthday Buccaneers
As everyone arrives, transform them into
treasure-seeking pirates with eyepatches,
face paint and temporary tattoos! To make
your own eyepatches, cut pieces of black
felt and sew them to strands of black elastic.
(Measure you child’s head to get
the approximate length for the elastic
before making each guest an eyepatch.)
Give your little buccaneers more character
using face paint to make mustaches and
scars. Add temporary tattoos to their arms
and give them pirate names if you wish.
Once everyone has been transformed into
hardened sailors, invite them below deck
(into your basement) for games and activities!
Space Telescopes
Every young treasure
seeker at your party needs a telescope
to spot supernovas, black holes and mutinous
pirates as they travel through the galaxy
in search of hidden treasure troves! Before
the party, collect paper towel tubes until
you have one for every guest. Paint the
tubes gold or silver, or cover them with
foil instead. When your guests arrive,
provide art supplies so the kids can decorate
their telescopes. Set out markers, construction
paper, glue, glitter, scraps of fabric,
etc. Let the children be creative and have
fun!
Black Hole Bean Bag Toss
This is a great
activity for kids of all ages. Before the
party, purchase several bean bags suitable
for tossing, or make your own by filling
socks with dried beans or uncooked rice.
Decorate a large piece of cardboard like
a galaxy - with planets, stars and the
ship from Treasure Planet. In the center,
cut out a hole large enough to toss the
bean bags through.
To play the game, hold the galaxy about
ten feet away from the location the children
will be standing and tossing. Give each
child several chances to toss the bean
bags into the “black hole.” Award
a small prize to the player with the best
aim!
Intergalactic Treasure Hunt
With a little
creativity, you can turn an ordinary treasure
hunt into a Treasure Planet adventure!
First, make signs for several rooms in
your home and decorate them accordingly.
For example, the “Black Hole” should
be as dark as possible, and the “Lagoon
Nebula Galaxy” could have planets
hanging from the ceiling or glow-in-the-dark
constellations. Create a “Space Storm” room
with metallic streamers dangling from the
ceiling. Set the storm in motion with fans
at each end of the room. Dim the lights
for more fun.
Once you’ve transformed several
rooms, make a treasure map. It should mark
a route traveling throughout “space” to
every room, without indicating exactly
where the loot is. (Make sure the loot
is well hidden with enough prizes or grab
bags for every child.)
When it’s time to play, give the
birthday child the treasure map and let
the kids explore each area on it. Instruct
them to look for a clue, written on a slip
of paper, in each room. Once the kids have
visited every room and gathered the clues,
help them find the treasure if they haven’t
already found it!
Note: a fun variation of this activity
is to hide the final treasures in a locked
trunk. Include a key with each clue. Once
the children have collected all the keys
and have discovered where the loot is,
they’ll have fun trying each key
until the correct one opens the treasure
box.
Delectable Treats
Majestic
Space Galleon Pizzas
To make these fantastic
edible ships, you’ll need:
French rolls; pizza sauce; pizza toppings;
constructions paper and straws for sails;
black olives and pretzel sticks for port
holes; and carrots for flags.
Prepare port holes, sails and flags ahead
of time. Portholes: cut large black pitted
olives in half horizontally, making a small
slit in the closed end of each half. Insert
a pretzel stick in the small slit, placing
half an olive on each end of the pretzel
stick. Make four sets of port holes for
each boat. Flags: cut carrot curls (thin,
lengthwise slices soaked in ice water overnight
to make them wavy.) Sails: cut rectangular
pieces of construction paper (or use white
onion skins) and punch holes through each
with ridged straws or skewer sticks. Attach
carrot flags to the tops.
To make the ships, slice rolls in half
lengthwise and hollow out a slight depression
in each one. Toast in a hot oven for about
15 min. and fill with pizza sauce. Space
port holes across top of the ship (olives
should be on either side of the bread).
Then add your pizza toppings. Bake at 400°F
for 10 min., or until cheese bubbles. Insert
sails with flags on top! Serve warm!
Pirate’s Brew
This frothy pirate
grog is sure to float your guests’ boats!
Fill tall glasses halfway with root beer.
Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to each;
fill with more soda. For fun, make a skull
and cross-bones cut-out for each guest
from black construction paper. Glue it
to the top of a each child’s straw
or long-handled spoon.

Decorating Tips
Spread
your tablecover on your party table. If
your child has any theme-related toys,
you can add them to the table for a more
festive display. Cut several one-to-two-foot-long
pieces of curling ribbon. Curl the ribbon
by pulling it between your thumb and the
blade of your scissors. Lay the resulting
curls on your table for added color. Hang
balloons in bunches for the best effect.
If you choose to fill balloons with helium,
wait until the party day to ensure they
float well!
Use balloons to mark the party spot; hang
them on the mailbox, near the front door,
or tie them to the birthday child's chair
to mark the seat of honor.
Place balloons anywhere that strikes your
fancy. The more the better!
Gather six or eight streamers and attach
them to the ceiling in the center of the
party room (or over the table). Use a light
fixture over the table, if you have one,
as the center point for the streamers.
To create colorful two-tone streamers,
put two differently colored streamers back-to-back,
twist as you walk them to the wall, and
attach at shoulder height.
Smile for the Camera!
Be sure to take lots of pictures. You and
your child will want to remember this special
party. A helpful hint: Order extra prints
and send them to the parents afterward.
Remember, it's not necessary to have everyone
in each picture. Focus on small groups
and avoid posing all the photos. Candids
capture the laughter best!
