Fun Activities
Talent
Show
This fun game allows children to demonstrate
their dancing, tumbling, and leaping skills.
Organize performers into teams. Assign
or draw for order of performance. Set aside
an area for the show, and don’t forget
to leave room for audience seating. Designate
an announcer and, although it need not
be competitive, a judge. Give teams the
same amount of time to prepare. Videotape
it if you wish, and give awards for all
sorts of categories, so no one feels left
out.
Gymnast's Jubilee
If the weather is nice,
this team activity is best played outside
because it will give you more room. Set
up several stations to test your little
gymnasts’ skills. Divide your guests
into equal teams. Each member of the team
must successfully complete each station,
run back to the next team member, and tag
his or her hand. Choose from the following
stations, or invent your own!
1. Balance Beam: guests must walk the length
of a long board or a log without falling
off. The beam doesn’t need to be
elevated, (especially with young children),
unless you wish. If you do not have a board,
make a straight line on the ground with
tape, paint, or chalk. For older children,
consider walking backwards on the beam
for more difficulty.
2. Somersault Skill: designate an area
where guests must somersault several times.
Mark a start and finish line, or lay out
a large blanket which each team member
must somersault across.
3. Jump Rope: set aside an area for jump
roping. Guests must jump a certain number
of times before moving on to the next station.
4. Tumbling Time: children must cartwheel,
leap, and dance across an area set aside
for tumbling. Allow your guests to be creative
and have fun as long as they travel across
the designated area.
5. Hand Stand: designate a team member
to spot each child, so no one gets hurt.
6. Other Ideas: Trampolines and monkey
bars are wonderful additions, if you have
access to them.
Adjust your stations according to the age
and skill level of your guests. Afterwards,
allow children time to play on their own,
make up routines, etc., and go at their
own pace. Have fun!
Balloon Dance
Attach an inflated balloon
to the wrist, ankle, or back of each dancer.
Turn on the radio or a music tape to start
everyone dancing. When the music begins,
each child must try to protect his or her
own balloon while trying to pop the other
dancers’ balloons. Award the final
dancer with a prize.
Delectable Treats
Chicken
Wings
Your little gymnasts will
flip for these tasty wings! Combine 1/4
cup soy sauce, 1/4 cup water, 2 tsp. brown
sugar, 1/8 tsp. ground ginger, and a small
clove garlic, minced. Pour mixture over
the wings to marinate. Refrigerate overnight,
or at least for 3 hours. Drain, sprinkle
with salt and pepper, dust with cornstarch,
and shake off any excess. Heat 1 1/2 inches
of oil in a deep frying pan to 350 degrees.
Cook 4 or 5 wings at a time for 5-6 minutes,
or until golden brown. Remove from the
skillet with a slotted spoon. Drain on
paper towels. Keep cooked wings warm in
a 150-degree oven while cooking the remaining
wings.
Fruit Smoothies
You will need: 1 qt. frozen
vanilla yogurt; 1 qt. fresh fruit of your
choice: oranges, pineapples, raspberries,
bananas, strawberries, etc.; 6 ice cubes;
and 2 liter bottle of raspberry ginger
ale. Whirl fruit, yogurt, and ice cubes
in a blender. Combine half of the ginger
ale and all the yogurt mixture in a punch
bowl for thick smoothies. Add remainder
of the ginger ale for a thinner mixture.
Vegetable Tray
Everyone loves finger food!
Slice carrots and spread celery sticks
with peanut butter. Arrange on a tray with
cherry tomatoes, olives, cauliflower, and
any vegetables your child enjoys. Provide
dip.
Colossal Cookie
Why not make a giant cookie
instead of a cake!?! Prepare your favorite
cookie recipe. Form a giant ball with all
the dough. Spray a baking sheet with vegetable
oil, and place the ball of dough on the
pan. Shape the entire ball into a large
circle, square, triangle, heart, or other
shape, about 1/2-inch thick. Bake 5-10
minutes longer than the recipe instructs
and check periodically. Test with toothpick
to make sure center is cooked. When cookie
is cool, carefully slide it onto a large
piece of foiled-covered cardboard or a
large tray. If you wish, decorate the cookie
in a gymnast theme, with a balance beam,
uneven bars, or a vault made of pretzel
sticks, licorice, pipe cleaners, etc. Add
miniature figurines if you have them, and
write the birthday child’s name to
honor them.
Decorating Tips
Spread your
tablecover on your party table. If your child
has any theme-related toys,
you can add them to the table for a more
festive display. Cut several one-to-two-foot-long
pieces of curling ribbon. Curl the ribbon
by pulling it between your thumb and the
blade of your scissors. Lay the resulting
curls on your table for added color. Hang
balloons in bunches for the best effect.
If you choose to fill balloons with helium,
wait until the party day to ensure they
float well!
Use balloons to mark the party spot; hang
them on the mailbox, near the front door,
or tie them to the birthday child's chair
to mark the seat of honor.
Place balloons anywhere that strikes your
fancy. The more the better!
Gather six or eight streamers and attach
them to the ceiling in the center of the
party room (or over the table). Use a light
fixture over the table, if you have one,
as the center point for the streamers.
To create colorful two-tone streamers,
put two differently colored streamers back-to-back,
twist as you walk them to the wall, and
attach at shoulder height.
Smile for the Camera!
Be sure to take lots of pictures. You and
your child will want to remember this special
party. A helpful hint: Order extra prints
and send them to the parents afterward.
Remember, it's not necessary to have everyone
in each picture. Focus on small groups
and avoid posing all the photos. Candids
capture the laughter best!
