Fun Activities
Pretzel-Dough Fun
Prepare dough before the party, and let
guests sculpt their own special VeggieTales
character to take home! To make dough for
four guests, measure 1 1/2 cups warm water
into a large bowl. Add a package of dry
yeast and blend. Combine and add 1 tsp.
salt, 1 Tbs. sugar, and 4 cups of flour.
Mix and knead dough with your hands. Cover
and set aside for 2 hours. On the big day,
protect your table with an oilcloth or
vinyl tablecloth. Give each guest a portion
of dough and a bit of flour. Encourage
them to flour their hands and knead the
dough before shaping their VeggieTales
character. When they are finished, place
the creations on greased baking sheets,
brush them with beaten egg, and bake at
350° F for about 15 minutes.
Learn to Like Your Veggies!
Write the
names of VeggieTales characters (or different
kinds of vegetables if guests are not familiar
with all of them) on masking tape and stick
one on each child’s back. In order
to discover what character they are, each
child must ask questions that can be answered
with "Yes" or "No." If
kids have trouble thinking of questions,
help them think of some: "Am I round
and plump?" "Can you turn me
into a pickle?" Hint: This game can
also be altered to play charades, where
each guest chooses a character randomly
from a hat. While he or she acts out the
chosen character, party guests will have
fun guessing which character it is!
Make Me Giggle
The title describes this
game best because the object of the game
is to make someone laugh! Choose a child
to be first, and form a circle around him
or her. Let the guests in the circle sing
silly songs, tell jokes, or make funny
faces to try and make the person in the
middle laugh. As long as the circle does
not touch the person in the middle (no
tickling!), anything goes. See who can
go the longest without laughing!
Friendly Follow the Leader
Join in the
fun with this silly activity! Choose a
leader and have all the party guests line
up behind him or her. As the leader makes
all sorts of creative moves, the rest of
the line follows. If the leader needs some
help you can suggest hopping, jumping,
twirling, rolling on the ground, etc. Pick
a new leader every few minutes, and play
music for added fun. Continue until everyone
has had a turn, or until they’re
ready for a new activity.
Tell a Tale
Seat your guests in a circle
and read them a VeggieTales story. Or,
if you prefer, you can let the children
watch a VeggieTales video or cartoon. This
is a wonderful activity for keeping the
kids entertained, and it will help them
calm down before they return home.
Delectable Treats
Silly
Shape Sandwiches
Get the gang together
for these fun-shaped sandwiches! Make
your child’s favorite kind of sandwich,
and use cookie cutters to cut them into
fun shapes. Let guests choose their own
shapes by selecting from a tray of sandwiches.
Frankencelery
Your kids will forget this
recipe is healthy when they see how fun
it is! Cut celery into six inch lengths,
and provide enough so each guest can create
their own Frankencelery character. Fill
the curve with of the peanut butter, and
place a dish of raisins on the table for
kids to eyes, ears, nose, and hair. This
recipe can also be fun for the birthday
child to help prepare before the party.
Mr. Lunt’s Crunchy Vegetable Dip
Your guests will be delighted when they
see who you’ve invited over for lunch!
Create your own VeggieTales character by
simply scraping out the insides of a small
pumpkin. If pumpkins are not in season,
use a large butternut squash instead. Wash
the pumpkin and then turn it upside down
to dry. Fill it with your child’s’ favorite
dip and set it on a bed of lettuce. Arrange
an assortment of freshly sliced vegetables
on top of the lettuce. Place a small hat
on top of Mr. Lunt after you’ve filled
him with dip, and sketch a silly face for
added fun.
Bumblyburg Berry Smoothies
Create the
sweet treat that everyone enjoys in Bumblyburg!
You will need the following: 1 qt frozen
vanilla yogurt; 1 qt fresh berries of your
choice: strawberry, raspberry, blueberry,
etc.; 6 ice cubes; and 2 liters Raspberry
Ginger Ale. Whirl fruit, yogurt, and ice
cubes in a blender. Combine half ginger
ale and yogurt mixture in a punch bowl
for thick smoothies. Add remainder of the
ginger ale for a thinner mixture.
Larry’s Lip Smacking Lemonade
Make
Larry’s favorite party drink at home!
Combine 2 cups of sugar, 1 cup lemon juice,
and the juice from 6 freshly squeezed lemons.
Stir until sugar dissolves completely.
Pour the mixture into a 2-quart container
and fill with cold water. Add ice to cool.
Makes 12 (8 ounce) servings. For the finishing
touch, pour lemonade into a punch bowl
and add a few drops of yellow food coloring
to create a colorful and tasty treat!
Decorating Tips
Spread
your tablecover on your party table. If
your child has any theme-related toys,
you can add them to the table for a more
festive display. Cut several one-to-two-foot-long
pieces of curling ribbon. Curl the ribbon
by pulling it between your thumb and the
blade of your scissors. Lay the resulting
curls on your table for added color. Hang
balloons in bunches for the best effect.
If you choose to fill balloons with helium,
wait until the party day to ensure they
float well!
Use balloons to mark the party spot; hang
them on the mailbox, near the front door,
or tie them to the birthday child's chair
to mark the seat of honor.
Place balloons anywhere that strikes your
fancy. The more the better!
Gather six or eight streamers and attach
them to the ceiling in the center of the
party room (or over the table). Use a light
fixture over the table, if you have one,
as the center point for the streamers.
To create colorful two-tone streamers,
put two differently colored streamers back-to-back,
twist as you walk them to the wall, and
attach at shoulder height.
Smile for the Camera!
Be sure to take lots of pictures. You and
your child will want to remember this special
party. A helpful hint: Order extra prints
and send them to the parents afterward.
Remember, it's not necessary to have everyone
in each picture. Focus on small groups
and avoid posing all the photos. Candids
capture the laughter best!
